Thank you to all who gave us such positive feedback on our inaugural newsletter last quarter. We've been inspired by your support and decided to do a newsletter each quarter focusing on a different topic of interest to our clients. Anna K. Smith, Director of Education, Hawaii Healing Arts College
It’s no longer just “common knowledge”—nowadays, there’s ample scientific research proving the benefits of massage therapy for pregnant moms and their babies. In addition to reducing the swelling and joint pain associated with pregnancy, massage has also been shown to lower the levels of stress hormones of pregnant women. This brings balance to the mother’s body and an improved environment in which to nurture baby. The benefits don’t end there: labor has been shown to be shorter and with fewer complications in mothers whose partners learned and provided basic massage strokes to their backs and legs during labor!

Some of the most powerful effects of massage come from its ability to relieve the anxiety, stress and depression that are often the natural result of normal hormonal changes occurring with pregnancy. We all know that pregnancy is a time of rapid change in a woman’s body, and that adapting to change can prove stressful. Having regularly scheduled “stress-buster” breaks during this time can mean the difference between a childbearing year that is jangled and disruptive, and one that is centered and balanced.

Before scheduling a prenatal massage, it’s best to get your doctor’s OK. You’ll want to choose a therapist with training in working with pregnant women, but a “certification” isn’t necessary unless yours is a high-risk pregnancy. If you’re having a lot of nausea, you’ll be more comfortable if you wait a month or so before enjoying the benefits of massage.
