New Years' Resolutions: Past to Present
The history of celebrating the New Year is something not everyone may know about. It is actually the oldest holiday there is; it was started about 4000 years ago by the Babylonians, although, they observed the New Year on the first day of spring. New Year’s Resolutions also date back to the Babylonian ages, but the goals have definitely changed. While modern day resolutions tend to aim more towards self-help and happiness, the Babylonians’ long-term goals involved returning farm equipment.

Today, the same ten resolutions are made to be broken every year: (1) to exercise and get fit, (2) to eat healthier, (3) to relieve stress and enjoy life more, (4) to spend more time with family, (5) to lose weight, (6) to quit drinking, (7) to quit smoking, (8) to spend more time helping others, (9) to save money or get out of debt, and (10) to get a better job. Statistics show that these top ten New Year’s Resolutions are forgotten and failed about 50% of the time. One author even concludes that 90% of resolutions dealing with working out, losing weight or quitting smoking will be broken by January 15!
